ESL Brain - feelings
I attended a workshop a couple of months ago in a local high school, by Victor Garcia a very very smart anthropologist from California.
The workshop was about how to get ahead in life by embracing your culture. He talked about religion, food, family, you know the usual Hispanic/Latino ideas of life. And then he talked about language, and it hit me. I can not express feelings in spanish! He talked about our culture tends to express feelings in our native language and we feel more meaning on saying "Te amo" than saying "I love you"... not me. I can tell my husband "i love you" and i know that i mean it with all of my heart and soul, but if say "te amo" it feels empty.
The same goes for when I am angry or sad. The first words that would come out of my mouth when i'm upset would be "I am so F&*%ing pissed off", rather than "estoy tan enojada".
And por mas que lo piense, i can't come up with a word that would have the equivalent meaning to "it was so amazing!" in spanish.
But then again, i might just not be able to express feelings at all.
